MURICIDAE (NEOGASTROPODA) FAUNA OF IZMIR BAY (AEGEAN SEA)
by Bilal Öztürk, Zeki Ergen & Mesut Önen
Abstract
This study deals with taxonomical features of the muricids sampled from Izmir Bay during the course of several studies over the period 1995-1998. In addition we recorded the ecological characteristics and the distribution of these muricids in Turkish coastal waters. A total of 265 individuals belonging to the14 genera and 24 species were identified from the samples collected from various biota and depths. Among these species, Fusinus rudis (Philippi, 1844) was reported for the first time in the gastropod fauna of the Turkish coastal waters. Trophon muricatus (Montagu, 1803) and Fusinus pulchellus (Philippi, 1844) were reported for the first time in the Turkish Mediterranean and Aegean coasts. In addition, a total of 9 species namely Muricopsis cristata (Brocchi, 1814), Ocinebrina aciculata (Lamarck, 1822), Buccinulum corneum (L., 1758), Engina leucozona (Philippi, 1843), Pollia dorbignyi (Payraudeau, 1826), Pollia scabra (Locard, 1886), Pollia scacchiana (Philippi, 1843), Fusinus rostratus (Olivi, 1796) and Nassarius incrassatus (Stroem, 1768), were new to the fauna of Turkish Aegean coasts.
VARIABILITY OF COWRY POPULATIONS
9. LYNCINA LYNX (L., 1758) FROM THE EAST COAST OF SINAI
by E. L. Heiman
Abstract Variability of a Lyncina lynx population inhabiting waters bordering the Sinai Peninsula in the Gulf of Aqaba is studied by means of statistical methods. The studied population is attributed to the Eritrean race, which can be separated from other lynx populations on the base of conchological characteristics.
It is shown that a possible taxonomic confusion connected with a name of the Eritrean race L. lynx williamsi is a part of a general problem with certain subspecific names introduced by Schilder & Schilder, 1938. Possible ways to solve this problem are discussed.

by Henk K. Mienis
Abstract The nomenclature of the single Paper mussel belonging to the genus Amygdalum living in the Red Sea is discussed. Known records of Amygdalum peasei (Newcomb, 1870) from the Red Sea are enumerated. It is a deep-water species inhabiting soft bottoms.
VARIABILITY OF COWRY POPULATIONS 10. A COWRY VARIETY
WITH DARK MARGINS (“NIGROCINCTA”)
by E. L. Heiman
Abstract It is shown that the phenomenon of considerable darkening of the shell margins described by Schilder, 1924 as var. nigrocincta can be observed within several cowry populations of different species.
VARIABILITY OF COWRY POPULATIONS 11. BISTOLIDA ERYTHRAEENSIS (SOWERBY, 1837) IN THE SINAI AREA OF THE GULF OF AQABA AND ITS COMPARISON WITH B. STOLIDA (L., 1758)
by E. L. Heiman
Abstract
The taxonomic status of a population of B. erythraeensis from the Sinai area is examined by means of statistical methods. Conchological characteristics of this population concur with these of the Eritrean race. Comparison of shells of B. erythraeensis and B. stolida confirms that these species can be separated conchologically.
VARIABILITY OF COWRY POPULATIONS

by E. L. Heiman
Abstract It is shown by means of a statistical study of qualitative shell characteristics that the gracilis population from the eastern coast of Sinai can be attributed to the Eritrean race.

13. ON THE IDENTITY OF PURPURADUSTA MICRODON (GRAY, 1828)
IN THE SINAI AREA OF THE GULF OF AQABA
by E. Heiman
Abstract It is shown by means of a statistical study that a population of Purpuradusta microdon inhabiting waters along the eastern coast of Sinai in the Gulf of Aqaba can be considered the subspecies Purpuradusta microdon microdon (Gray, 1828)
VARIABILITY OF COWRY POPULATIONS
14. A LONG TOOTHED FORM OF EROSARIA EROSA (L., 1758)

15. ABOUT EROSARIA NUCLEUS STURANYI IN THE GULF OF AQABA
by E. L. Heiman
Abstract The taxonomic identity of Erosaria nucleus (L. 1758) inhabiting waters along the Sinai coast in the Gulf of Aqaba is verified by means of a statistical study. It is shown that the nucleus population from Sinai can be attributed to the Eritrean race E. nucleus sturanyi.

Abstract Firteen additional cases of blister pearl formation in landsnails are described. Pearl formation in terrestrial snails seems to be a much more common feature than has been presumed so far and is known from at least 21 (sub)species.

by G. Buzzurro & P. Russo
Abstract: The taxonomic identity of Fusus (Pseudofusus) dalpiazi is examined by comparing the original description by Coen with live collected specimens in the Lagoon of Venice, the locus typicus of the species. Fusinus dalpiazi is recognized as an ecophenotype and synonym of Fusinus sanctaeluciae.

THE MOLLUSC FAUNA OF THE NA’AMAN CATCHMENT AREA, ISRAEL
1. A REVIEW OF THE RECORDS OF THE INLAND MOLLUSCS
by Henk K. Mienis & Reuven Ortal
Abstract: A review is given of the past and present mollusc fauna of the Na’aman catchment area, Israel. So far 48 taxa have been recorded: 40 gastropods and 8 bivalves. Thirty species are considered wetland species (aquatic and amphibious molluscs); 18 others are terrestrial snails and slugs. Due to pollution and changes in the environment only 13 wetland species are known to live in the studied area today. The former saltswamps north of ‘En HaMifraz harbour are the only populations of the landsnail Xerotricha apicina in Israel.
