Mystery Fossil

Data: Hi, we just bought this fossil at an estate sale here in the Beaumont, TX area. Per the handwritten sign where the bucket(s) of fossils were located, they were picked up in Tennessee. Help IDing this would be appreciated --- thank you!

Identified: large half whorl of an ammonite

Discussions:

  • It is a large half whorl of an ammonite....Allen A.

  • Yes indeed. They look Jurassic or Cretaceous, so they're not likely to be Tennesseean...
Without good sutural detail, which doesn't appear to be present in this specimen (probably a body-chamber steinkern), it's unidentifiable even to family....Andrew G.
