Mystery Cowrie

Data:
Hello. I have a shell I cannot identify, or it just isn't in my books, or it is a immature animal. It measures 85mm long, 50mm wide and about 41mm high. I have included pictures.

I cannot tell where it came from because I got it either from a shell shop or from a friend. I really don't remember, so I looked in my books to see a pattern match but to no avail. There are so many.

Ideas:

  • I believe the shell is much too inflated to be either C. talpa or C. exusta.
It looks to me like a juvenile Cypraea cervus.  Paul M.

  • It looks to be a juvenile Macrocypraea cervus -- considering the large size.
    http://www.jaxshells.org/cergif.htm. Bill F.

  • It certainly looks to be a C. talpa, but could be C. exusta. The lack of
locality data makes it tough to say for sure. C. talpa is far more common, so
it's the better guess. Bob D.

  • Definitely C. cervus, quite common here in SoFla. I have an identical specimen with the same under-developed teeth, which is not so common... Mike G.

  • I think it looks like it could be an immature Cypraea talpa... Vicky W.
