January 06, 2009: Hello lovers of Ni'ihau Shell Leis, It is with regret that I share with you our decision to bring our online component to an end with the closing of this year. 2008 was a challenging year for us all. Fewer storms brought small numbers of shells ashore for our 'Ohana, who traveled by foot to the beaches each day to search for shells. Many families had to combine their shells together to make the leis they could. We also lost some of our Kupuna lei makers, pioneers in some of the complex and beautiful Kahelelani and Alilea leis we adore. The next generation is stepping in to carry on, and they too will continue the art form for years to come. With a tough economy, and fewer shells available, the families are focusing their efforts on local craft fairs and supplying local shops. For 2009, the families will be working together at the following craft fairs: Ritz Carlton Maui - April 2009, Kapalua, Maui Merrie Monarch - April 2009, Hilo, Hawaii Made in Hawaii - August 2009, Honolulu, O'ahu We thank you for your support of the Ni'ihau lei, and hope you gained an appreciation for a unique and traditional craft. If you shared the web site as an educational tool, Mahalo for keeping our culture alive. If you are interested in contacting the families about a special lei, please feel free to email me and I will put you in contact with one of the lei makers directly. Mahalo kakou for your support and interest. Hau'oli Makihiki Hou (Happy New Year) to all. May Ke Akua care for each and every one of you. Mahalo Piha, Kahanukakela
