Ms. Hemphill's Class
Lessons by the Strombus gigas - The Giant Pink or Queen Conch

Enchanted Learning.com article states that the conch is used as a trumpet. This fact inspired a conch-shaped poem by Madison. and a drawing by Liam . of a person blowing into a conch

by Madison

The heavy shell, formed by the buildup of calcium carbonate, is glossy pink, orange, or yellow on its interior and reaches its full size at around 3 years of age. It then starts to form a “lip” that flares away from the shell. The shell continues to thicken throughout the conch’s life.

A "Cool Queen Conch Fact" that a queen conch may travel up to 1 mile in a 2-month period inspired the above cartoon
drawn by Sidyney.

Conch may wander for miles foraging on algae, sea grasses, sand, and dead material. Tagging studies show that queen conch may travel up to 1 mile in a 2-month period and more than 700 yards in a week.

My Little Conch Shell

My little conch shell
You are mine
If I did not have you
I would whine

You have so much beauty
With your pink shade and so
that I could never
let you go.

My little conch shell
I'm going to yell
You are so pretty
And everyone can tell

by Katelin

She's a queen
You have seen
but not known much about
She's a pink conch! No doubt
She lives in shells
That's where she dwells
She's down in the sea
She interests me
She is a Conch!
Get ready to launch
Into the deep blue sea
And come live with me
to see the Queen Conch.

Strombus Gigas

Strombus gigas, the giant pink shell
Too bad your secrets, you can not tell
The shell of mystery, the shell of grace
That brings a smile to my face

Strombus gigas, tall or small
Each one has beauty, yes them all
I wish I had my own to keep
But for now I'll dream of them in my sleep

Nature of the Strombus Gigas:

Once this shell was a tiny pebble
but look at it now it is incredible.
Nature has made this shell nice and strong
it will live very long.

This shell was made on a fine day
and you can see it now on the beach as it lay.
The Strombus gigas may stink
but it has a color of pink
A snail lives inside it dead or alive.

This shell is one of a kind
it sometimes may be hard to find.
You see them here and there
but today they may be rare.

Pink Queen Conch

I wish I could walk on the beach
and find a conch in my reach.
I'd think about the history,
the age is really a mystery.
I want to find a Pink Queen.
