Oreo's Story Continues
July 28, 2007

Oreohelix strigosa
(Gould, 1846): Rocky Mountain Snail
Synonyms. Helix cooperi W. G. Binney, 1858; O. strigosa canadica Berry, 1922.

Yes, Oreo survived another winter, spring and is now well into summer.

He is hibernating for longer periods of time now (up to 34 days). Oreo only stays active (on and off) for a day or two - never more now! Could it be he/she's getting old? I do not know how long this species lives nor do I have any way of telling how old Oreo was when it was adopted back on August 23, 2004.

I must admit that at times I think he has died, but, there is a sure way of bringing him out of hibernation - Move him on to a rock or moss them place a few drops of pure water on him. He always wakes up within 12 to 24 hours. Seldom does he stay awake more than a few hours when awakened in this way unless he has slept for at least two weeks.

As usual when awakening Oreo goes directly to the roof of his/her pen to drink up the condensation found there (he has never taken water from a container lid).  Oreo then samples his food supply: lettuce, corn starch (a new favorite), and still his all-time favorite - oatmeal porridge. Spring brought on the dandelion blooms as well which he really enjoys.

It is hard to see if Oreo has grown any more shell. Other than the lengthening periods of hibernation there is very little more to say.

2007 - Yes I'm really alive - just sleeping!
