Oreo's Story Continues
December 04, 2004

Oreohelix strigosa
(Gould, 1846): Rocky Mountain Snail
Synonyms. Helix cooperi W. G. Binney, 1858; O. strigosa canadica Berry, 1922.

Oreo posses for a December portrait on his lettuce

Oreo is now on a "winter" schedule. He sleeps for any where of 10 to 18 days at a time. Then he emerges and eats quite a bit of lettuce and algae from his pen. It is hard to tell if he eats any of the moss. He has grown a fair bit of new shell and it is slightly a different colour than the shell he was producing on his old home "the rock slide" but it appears healthy and feels as hard as the old shell.

He has has a "Greek Penpal" who told him that she had a aloe plant in her home, so I planted one in Oreo's moss and sure enough, he went straight to it. He is sound asleep on the base of the aloe. This is different as he usually sleeps upside down on the lid or his rock cave. I guess he appreciated a change of scenery.

Merry Christmas from Oreo

You can see the holes in the lettuce that Oreo has eaten. He does this actually quite quickly This hole was done in about 4 minutes!

Good Bye for now
